来源于古英语gemong(人群)。gemong的前半部分ge-(共同)是选择性前缀,gemong的后半部分-mong与mingle(混合)有派生关系。on gemong是“在人群中”,引申为“在中间、被环绕”的意思；到12世纪,前缀ge-消失,on gemong成为onmong,并最终变为among。

原则上between用于两者之间,而among用于三者或三者以上之间。
当实体被看作不同的个体时用between,当被看作整体或集合时用among。
between后接复数名词时，仍表示“两者之间”，
如 a treaty between the three powers. 三国协约。表示三国两两之间的相互关系。
另外，在 between A, B ... and D 结构中，须用between。
