阿拉伯数学家Abu Ja far Mohammed ibn-Musa al-Khwarizmi,也被叫做al-khwarizmi,意思是"来自Khwarizm的人"。Khwarizm是现在土库曼斯坦的Khiva。
al-khwarizmi在中古拉丁语的派生词是algorismus(阿拉伯语中的后缀-izmi进入拉丁语后被接受为-ism)。在古法语的派生词是algorismus、augorime。在古英语的派生词是augrim,受拉丁语影响14世纪拼写为algorism,17世纪又受希腊语arithmos(数字)影响拼写为algorithm。
